Rules of Play
The AAA (Alterated Alternity Alternative) uses a modular and scalable set of rules to support everything from modern-day technothrillers to far-future space operas.
Core Mechanics
The foundation of the Alternity system is the Action Check and the Success Check. These mechanics allow for a range of outcomes beyond simple “pass or fail,” providing varying degrees of success based on the quality of the roll.
Chapters
- Character Creation: Defining your character’s profession, abilities, and background.
- Characters in Action: Detailed rules for performing tasks, combat, and damage.
- Skills: Broad and specialty skills used for various activities.
- Perks & Flaws: Advantages and disadvantages that define your character.
- Attributes: Motivation, moral attitude, and character traits.
- Achievements: How characters grow and improve through their experiences.
How to Roll
The game uses a Control Die (d20) and various Situation Dice.
- Success Check: Roll

Degrees of Success
- Ordinary: Success at the base level.
- Good: A significantly better outcome.
- Amazing: The best possible result for the action.

Chapter 3: Characters in Action
Characters in Action
In Alternity, the game comes alive when the Gamemaster asks: “What do you do?” This chapter covers the mechanics of how characters interact with the world, perform actions, and handle the consequences of those actions.
The Nature of Scenes
Adventures are divided into Scenes, which act like chapters in a story. There are three primary types of scenes:
1. Challenge Scenes
Challenges involve a character’s struggle against nature, hazards, or technical problems (e.g., disarming a bomb, navigating an asteroid field).
