Character Advancement

In Alterated Alternity Alternative (AAA), character progression is not merely a tally of experience spent, but a measure of your character’s total weight and influence in the galaxy. This weight is tracked through Advancement Points (AP), representing the cumulative sum of every skill, perk, and benefit acquired over a career.

The Flow of Experience

AAA utilizes a fluid progression model where growth occurs incrementally between sessions. Experience Points (XP) represent the currency of learning, usually awarded at a rate of 3 to 5 points per session. While the primary time for growth is between game sessions, the Game Master may permit immediate spending to reflect a sudden “combat insight” or a successful narrative arc involving training and study.

To maintain narrative consistency, a character is limited to gaining a maximum of one rank per specialty skill, per session. This ensures that even the most dedicated trainee allows time for their new knowledge to be integrated before pushing further into the unknown.

The Journey of Titles

As your total AP accumulates, your character transitions through five distinct Titles. These milestones mark a shift in how the character is perceived by the world and the upper limits of what they can achieve.

Character Title Total AP Max Skill Rank Max Broad Skills
Rookie 0 - 49 5 5
Seasoned 50 - 99 8 7
Veteran 100 - 199 10 9
Exemplar 200 - 299 12 11
Legend 300+ No Limit 13

When a character crosses a threshold (50, 100, 200, or 300 AP), they immediately undergo a profound shift. An Ability Score of their choice increases by 1 point automatically, reflecting their honed physical or mental state. Additionally, they are entitled to purchase one specialized Achievement Benefit, expand their capacity for new Broad Skills by 2, and gain a permanent bonus to their Renown as their name begins to carry more weight across systems.

Narrative Impact and World Reaction

A Character Title is more than a mechanical milestone; it is a narrative status that dictates how the world interacts with the character. As a character ascends in Title, their reputation precedes them, often leading to tangible shifts in their career or social standing.

  • Professional Promotion: A military officer may be promoted to a higher rank, gaining command over squads or vessels. Similarly, a member of a paramilitary group or a criminal organization might move up the hierarchy, gaining authority and access to restricted resources.
  • Specialized Offers: A character with a background in business or technical expertise might find themselves approached by corporations or shadowy syndicates offering lucrative deals or high-stakes contracts that would have been unavailable to a Rookie.
  • Social Gravity: The way NPCs react changes. A Veteran or Exemplar commands respect (or fear) in their field. Their presence can sway negotiations, intimidate rivals, or inspire allies simply by the weight of their established history.

GMs are encouraged to weave these Title advancements into the campaign’s story, ensuring that the mechanical growth is mirrored by the character’s increasing footprint in the galaxy.

The Art of Mastery and Scale

Mastery in a field follows a law of diminishing returns. While initial competence is relatively inexpensive to acquire, pushing the boundaries of what is possible requires an exponential investment of time and focus. This is represented by the Standard Price of a skill, which increases as you reach higher ranks.

Specialty Skill Ranks Standard Price Calculation
Ranks 1 to 5 Base List Price
Ranks 6 to 8 Base List Price + 2
Ranks 9 to 10 Base List Price + 4
Ranks 11+ Base List Price + 6

Your Total AP is always calculated using this Standard Price. While factors such as “Favored” skills or specialized Training may reduce the XP cost of a rank, you always add the full Standard Price to your AP total. This ensures your Title accurately reflects the complexity of your training, regardless of how efficient the learning process was.

Breadth vs. Depth

The Title thresholds create a deliberate ceiling for vertical mastery. A character who focuses exclusively on a single combat skill will eventually find themselves unable to improve further until they reach their next cap. This ceiling is a prompt for horizontal growth.

Rather than becoming a specialized tool with a singular purpose, the character is encouraged to diversify. To reach the next Title, they must invest in utility skills—perhaps learning First Aid, System Operation, or social Interaction. By the time the character reaches the rank of Exemplar or Legend, they are not just masters of a single trade, but versatile survivors with the depth required to influence the fate of the galaxy.
